John Villiers Farrow was an noted Australian-American screenwriter and film director. He was born on February 10, 1904 in Sidney, Australia and died on January 27, 1963 in Beverly Hills, California. He is best remembered for writing the screenplay for “Around the World in Eighty Days,” which won him an Academy Award, and for directing “Wake Island,” which won him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.

He was married to actress Maureen O’Sullivan and through that marriage, he was the father of actress Mia Farrow and the grandfather of newscaster Ronan Farrow, all three of whom are listed on this site.

Farrow was of English ancestry. His paternal grandfather was James Farrow, who was an immigrant from County Norfolk, England. His paternal grandmother was Jane Maria Canham, who was an immigrant from West Lynn, Norfolk, England.

His maternal grandmother was George Savage, who was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, whose parents were immigrants from Buckinghamshire, England. His maternal grandmother was Emily Piggott, who was an immigrant from St. Marylebone, London, England.
