John McLean was an American jurist and politician. He was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio, from March 4, 1813 to October 8, 1816, Commissioner of the General Land Office, from September 11, 1822 to June 26, 1823, the U.S. Postmaster General, from June 26, 1823 to March 4, 1829, and Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from March 7, 1829 to April 4, 1861.

He was a candidate for the Anti-Masonic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1832.

Justice McLean was the son of Sophia (Blackford) and Fergus McLean. His father was born in Coleraine, Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland.

Justice McLean’s maternal grandfather was Nathaniel Blackford (the son of John Blackford and Ruth Sutton) and Frances Blackford. Justice McLean’s great-grandfather John Blackford was the son of Daniel Blackford and Ruth Hull. Justice McLean’s great-grandmother Ruth Sutton was the daughter of Thomas Sutton and Mary Adams.

Justice McLean’s maternal grandmother was Frances Le-Forge.
