Richard Shelby is an American politician. He has been a U.S. Senator from Alabama, since January 3, 1987, and a Chair of the Senate Rules Committee, since January 3, 2017. He was previously a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Alabama, from January 3, 1979 to January 3, 1987, Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, from January 3, 1997 to January 3, 2001, and again from January 20, 2001 to June 6, 2001, and Chair of the Senate Banking Committee, from January 3, 2003 to January 3, 2007, and again from January 3, 2015 to January 3, 2017, among other duties. He has been a Republican since 1994, and was previously a Democrat.
Richard is the son of Alice Leon (Skinner) and Ozie Houston Shelby. He is married to Annette Nevin, with whom he has two children.
Richard’s paternal grandparents were William Cobb Shelby (the son of William Houston Shelby and Elizabeth Malone Cobb) and Violia “Lola” McClendon. Richard’s great-grandfather William was the son of John Rufus Shelby and Mary Ann Deaton. Elizabeth was the daughter of James Jackson Cobb and Elizabeth Malone “Betsy” Campbell.
Richard’s maternal grandparents were Thomas Hosea Skinner (the son of Thomas H. Skinner and Martha Olivia Perkins) and Mary/Mollie Estelle Miller. Richard’s great-grandfather Thomas was the son of Thomas J. Skinner and Ann B.
