Aaron Burr was an American politician. A member of the Democratic-Republican Party, he was the third Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1801 to March 4, 1805. He was elected to the position in 1800. He was also Attorney General of New York, from September 29, 1789 to November 8, 1791, and a U.S. Senator from New York, from March 4, 1791 to March 3, 1797. In 1804, he killed politician Alexander Hamilton in a duel, for which he was never tried.
He was a Democratic-Republican Party candidate for President of the United States in 1796 and 1800. He received an electoral vote for President from a faithless elector in the 1792 election.
Vice President Burr was the son of Esther (Edwards) Burr and The Rev. Aaron Burr, Sr., a Presbyterian minister, who was the second President of Princeton University, from 1748 to 1757.
Vice President Burr was married to Theodosia Bartow Prevost, until her death, and to Eliza Jumel, until their divorce, finalized on the day of his death. He had at least seven children, including two with Theodosia, and two with his East Indian servant, Mary Emmons.
Vice President Burr’s paternal grandfather was Daniel Burr (the son of Jehu Burr and Esther Ward). Daniel was born in Connecticut. Jehu was born in Lavenham, Suffolk, England. Esther was the daughter of Andrew Ward, who was born in Homersfield, Suffolk, England, and of Hester Sherman, who was born in Dedham, Essex, England.
Vice President Burr’s paternal grandmother was Elizabeth Pinckney (the daughter of Phillip Pinckney and Jane Phippen). Elizabeth was born in Connecticut. Phillip was born in Dinton, Wiltshire, England, the son of Philip Pinckney and Margaret Gough. Jane was the daughter of The Rev. George Fitzpen/Phippen and Joan Rie Penrose, who were born in Weymouth, Dorset, England.
Vice President Burr’s maternal grandfather was The Rev. Jonathan Edwards, a revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist Protestant theologian (the son of The Rev. Timothy Edwards and Esther Stoddard). The Rev. Jonathan was born in Connecticut. The Rev. Timothy was the son of Richard Edwards and Elizabeth Tuttle, and was of English and Welsh descent. Esther was of English descent, and was the daughter of The Rev. Solomon Stoddard and Esther Warham. The Rev. Solomon’s maternal uncle was Sir George Downing, 1st Baronet, for whom Downing Street, the U.K. Prime Minister’s residence, is named.
Vice President Burr’s maternal grandmother was Sarah Pierpont (the daughter of The Rev. James Pierpont and Mary Hooker). Sarah was born in Massachusetts. The Rev. James was the son of John Pierpont, who was born in London, Middlesex, England, and of Thankful Stowe, who was born in Biddenden, Kent, England. Mary was the daughter of The Rev.
