John Nance Garner was an American politician and lawyer, nicknamed Cactus Jack. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Vice President of the United States, from March 4, 1933 to January 20, 1941. He was elected to the position in 1932 and 1936. He was previously also a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, from March 4, 1903 to March 4, 1933, House Minority Leader, from March 4, 1929 to March 4, 1931, and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, from December 7, 1931 to March 4, 1933.
He was a candidate for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States in 1932 and 1940.
Vice President Garner was the son of Sarah Jane (Guest) and John Nance Garner. He was married to Mariette Rheiner Garner, until her death, with whom he had a son.
Vice President Garner’s paternal grandfather was John Nance Garner (the son of Obediah/Obadiah Brice Garner and Helen Elanor/Elinor Nance).
