P. T. Barnum was an American showman, politician, businessperson, author, publisher, and philanthropist. He founded the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1871. As a Republican, he was a Member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from the Fairfield, Connecticut district, from 1866 to 1869, and Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, from 1875 to 1876.
P. T. was the son of Irene (Taylor) and Philo Barnum. He was of Colonial American (English) ancestry, with roots in Connecticut going back to the early/mid 1600s.
He was married to Charity Hallett, until her death, and then to English socialite Nancy Fish, until his death. He had four children with Charity.
