Charles Evans Hughes was an American statesman and politician. A Republican, he served as Governor of New York, from January 1, 1907 to October 6, 1910, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, from October 10, 1910 to June 10, 1916, U.S. Secretary of State, from March 5, 1921 to March 4, 1925, and Chief Justice of the United States, from February 24, 1930 to June 30, 1941.
He was the Republican Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 1916. He was also a candidate for the Republican Party’s 1908 presidential nomination.
Chief Justice Hughes was the son of Mary Catherine (Connelly) and The Rev. David Charles Hughes, an evangelical Baptist minister, who was an abolitionist. His father was born in Monmouthshire, Wales. His mother was born in Saugerties, Ulster County, New York. He was raised partly in Oswego, New York and Newark, New Jersey.
Chief Justice Hughes was married to Antoinette Carter, with whom he had four children, including Charles Evans Hughes, Jr., who served as U.S. Solicitor General, from May 27, 1929 to April 16, 1930.
Chief Justice Hughes’ maternal grandfather was William Connelly, Jr. (the son of William Connelly and Lydia Merihew). Chief Justice Hughes’ grandfather William was born in New York. Chief Justice Hughes’ great-grandfather William was the son of Michael Connelly, who was Irish, and of Naomi Barber.
Chief Justice Hughes’ maternal grandmother was Margaret Ann Terpenning (the daughter of Lyerck Terpenning and Mariah Krows). Mariah was the daughter of Leonard Krows and Deborah Ostrander, who was of Dutch descent.
