Phyllis Schlafly was an American movement conservative, lawyer, and author.
Phyllis was the daughter of Marie Odile (Dodge) and John Bruce Stewart, a machinist and salesman of industrial equipment. She was married to attorney John Fred Schlafly, Jr., until his death, with whom she had six children, including lawyer and conservative activist Andrew Schlafly. Her husband John was from a wealthy family, and was the grandson of August Schlaefly, who was a Swiss emigrant, from Canton of Bern.
Phyllis was a devout Catholic.
She had deep Colonial American (in Connecticut and New York) roots on her mother’s side.
Phyllis’ paternal grandfather was named Andrew F. Stewart. Andrew was a master mechanic with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. His own father was Scottish.
Phyllis’ maternal grandfather was attorney Ernest Cole Dodge (the son of Egbert Dodge and Sarah Louisa Sherwood). Ernest was born in Illinois. Egbert was the son of David Stoddard Dodge and Nancy Rice. Sarah was the daughter of The Rev. Adiel Sherwood and Emma Catherine Heriot.
