Glenn Gould was a Canadian pianist. He was one of the best-known and most-celebrated classical pianists of his time.
Glenn was the son of Florence Emma (Grieg) and Russell Herbert Gold. His family changed their surname to Gould around 1939, to avoid being mistaken for being Jewish.
Glenn was a first cousin, twice removed, of Norwegian composer and pianist Edvard Grieg. Glenn’s maternal great-great-grandparents, John Grieg and Maren Regine Haslund, were also Evard’s paternal grandparents.
Glenn’s paternal grandfather was Thomas George Gold (the son of The Rev. Isaac Gold and Mary Lucy Proctor). Thomas was born in Bond Head, Simcoe County, Ontario. The Rev. Isaac was the son of Isaac Gold. Mary was the daughter of Thomas D. Proctor and Deborah T. Shaw.
Glenn’s paternal grandmother was Alma Roseana Horne (the daughter of Andrew Horne and Mary Stillwell). Andrew was the son of George Horne and Anne Thomson, who was born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.
Glenn’s maternal grandfather was named Charles Holan Grieg (the son of Peter Grieg and Emma). Charles was born in Hamilton, Hamilton Division, Ontario. Peter was the son of John Grieg and Maren Regine Haslund, who were born in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. John’s own father was Scottish, from Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.
Glenn’s maternal grandmother was Mary Catherine Flett (the daughter of John Flett and Flora McKenzie). Mary Catherine was born in Mount Forest, Wellington County, Ontario, to Scottish parents. John was born in Harray, Orkney, the son of John Flett and Catherine Scott. Flora was born in Argyleshire.
