She is the daughter of Margaret Dorothy (Killam), a dietician and nutritionist, and Carl Edmund Atwood, an entomologist. Her father was from Clyde River, Shelburne County, and her mother was from Woodville, Kings County, both in Nova Scotia. Her family had deep roots in the province, going back 200 years, and in Massachusetts before that. Margaret was raised in the backwoods of northern Québec, and as well as Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, and Toronto.

Margaret has a daughter with her late partner, novelist Graeme Gibson.

Margaret’s paternal grandfather was Herbert Leslie Atwood (the son of Benjamin Ellis Atwood and Dorcas Swaine Nickerson). Herbert was born in Rebmico Lake, Yarmouth, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. Benjamin was the son of Benjamin Atwood and Deborah Swaine.

Margaret’s paternal grandmother was Florence Cornelia McGowan (the daughter of Daniel McGowan and Mary B. Davies). Florence was born in Summerville, Hants County, Nova Scotia.

Margaret’s maternal grandfather was Harold Edwin Killam (the son of William Henry Killam and Amanda Fitzalan Woodman). Harold was born in Woodville, Kings County, Nova Scotia. William was the son of Amasa I. Killam and Amy L. Rand.

Margaret’s maternal grandmother was named Ora Louise Webster (the daughter of Samuel W. Webster and Louise/Louisa). Ora was born in Morristown, Kings County, Nova Scotia.
