Burton K. Wheeler was an American politician. Mostly a member of the Democratic Party, he served as a U.S. Senator from Montana, from March 4, 1923 to January 3, 1947.
He was the Progressive Party’s nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1924, with Robert M. La Follette, Sr. as the nominee for President.
Burton was the son of Mary Elizabeth Rice (Tyler) and Asa Leonard Wheeler. He was of Colonial American (English) descent through all of his grandparents. He was married to Lulu M. White, until her death, with whom he had six children, including civil rights and labour leader Frances Wheeler Sayler.
Burton’s paternal grandfather was Aaron Wheeler (the son of Asa Wheeler and Abigail Southwick). Aaron was born in Massachusetts. Asa was the son of Obadiah Wheeler and Hannah Baker. Abigail was the daughter of Lawrence Southwick and Patience Handy.
Burton’s paternal grandmother was Miriam Fay (the daughter of Baxter Fay and Eleanor Wheeler). Miriam was born in Vermont. Baxter was the son of Adam Fay and Lydia Babcock.
