Preston Manning is a Canadian politician. He has been Leader of the Reform Party of Canada, from November 1, 1987 to March 25, 2000, and Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons, from June 2, 1997 to March 26, 2000. He founded the Reform Party and was its only federal leader. He was a Member of Parliament for Calgary Southwest (AB), from October 25, 1993 to January 31, 2002. He has been called the “father of modern Canadian Conservatism.”
Preston is the son of Muriel Aileen (Preston) and Ernest Manning (Ernest Charles Manning), a politician, of the Social Credit Party, who was Premier of Alberta, from May 31, 1943 to December 12, 1968; and later Senator for Edmonton West, from October 7, 1970 to September 20, 1983. His father was born in Carnduff, Saskatchewan, to English parents. Preston grew up in Garneau, Edmonton, and later at his family’s dairy farm.
He is married to musician Sandra Beavis, with whom he has five children.
Preston’s paternal grandfather was George Henry Manning (the son of Robert Manning and Susanna Amos). George was born in Bury St Edmunds, St Edmundsbury Borough, Suffolk, England. Robert was the son of James Manning and Mary Bailey.
Preston’s paternal grandmother was named Elizabeth Mara Dixon/Dickson. Elizabeth was English.
Preston’s maternal grandfather was William Preston (the son of William Preston and Jane Irwin). Preston’s great-grandfather William was the son of William Preston, who was born in Berwick, Scotland, and of Margaret Harvey.
