John Tamihere is a New Zealand politician, lawyer, and radio co-host. He was the Cabinet minister for the Labour Party between 2002 and 2004. He was affiliated with the Labour Party until he joined Te Pāti Māori (Māori Party) in 2020 as co-leader. He was then succeeded as co-leader of Te Pāti Māori (Māori Party) by his son-in-law Rawiri Waititi. Tamihere has five children and is married to Awerangi Durie. His daughter Kiri Tamihere is married to politician Rawiri Waititi.
He is the son of John Hamil Tamihere and Ruby Elaine Tamihere (nee McEwan/McEwen). His mother was of Irish and Scottish descent, and was raised in an Irish Catholic family. He is affiliated to Whakatōhea and Ngāti Porou ki Hauraki. His brother is convicted murderer David Tamihere.

His paternal grandmother was Wikitoria Mareroa, the daughter of Henare Mareroa and Te Omerengi Hale. Henare was the son of Tamati Te Rerehorua and Horiana Rakerake Ingoakore. Te Omerengi Hale was the daughter of Hekiera Hale and Hiria Reitapu. Hekiera Hale was likely the son of William Frederick Hale (who emigrated with his parents from St Albans, England), and of Pe Whataaruhe, who was Māori of Ngāti Porou.
