Philippa was the daughter of George Samuel Schuyler, a black journalist and essayist, and Josephine Cogdell, a white Texan from a wealthy family. Her parents believed that interracial marriage could produce extraordinary offspring.
Philippa’s paternal grandfather was named George Francis Schuyler (the son of Anthony Schuyler and Phebe Ann Baltimore). George was born in Troy, New York and was a chef.
Philippa’s paternal grandmother was named Eliza Fisher (the daughter of Philip Fisher and Helen Louisa Liedendraught). Helen was born in New Jersey, the daughter of a Malagasy woman and a German ship captain from Bavaria.
