Robert Fripp is an English musician, songwriter, record producer, and author. He was the guitarist, founder, and longest-lasting member of progressive rock band King Crimson. He has worked considerably as a session musician and collaborator, including with David Bowie, Peter Gabriel, Daryl Hall, Blondie, Brian Eno, Midge Ure, Talking Heads, and David Sylvian. He co-composed the startup sound of the Windows Vista operating system, and invented Frippertronics, a tape delay system, and new standard tuning. His music is influenced by classical and folk traditions, and includes asymmetric rhythms. He had previously been a member of band The Ravens.
Robert is the second child of a working-class family, the son of Edith and Arthur Henry Fripp. His father was born in Gosport, Hampshire, England. His mother was born in Abertillery, Gwent, Wales, to a mining family, and worked at the Bournemouth Records Office. His father used his mother’s earnings to start a business as an estate agent. His uncle was squadron leader Alfie Fripp, who, after being shot down during WWII, was the oldest surviving and longest serving British POW.
Robert is married to singer and actress Toyah Willcox.
Robert’s paternal grandfather was Austin Henry Fripp (the son of Abraham Fripp and Elizabeth Gilbert). Austin was born in Moor Crichel, Dorset. Abraham was born in Witchampton, Dorset, the son of Abraham Fripp and Mary Lovell. Elizabeth was born in Crichel, Dorsetshire, the daughter of Edward Gilbert and Hannah Lawrence.
