Kim Campbell is a Canadian politician, lawyer, university professor, diplomat, and writer. A member of the Progressive Conservative Party, she served as the 19th Prime Minister of Canada, from June 25, 1993, to November 4, 1993. As such, she is Canada’s first (and thus far, only) female Prime Minister. She has also served as Minister of Justice (from 1990 to 1993), and, simultaneously, from January 4, 1993, to June 25, 1993, as Minister responsible for Federal-Provincial Relations, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Minister of National Defence.
Prime Minister Campbell is the daughter of Phyllis Margaret (Cook) and George Thomas Campbell, a barrister. Prime Minister Campbell is married to pianist, actor, and playwright Hershey Felder. She was previously married to mathematician Nathan Divinsky and lawyer Howard Eddy.
Three of Prime Minister Campbell’s grandparents were Scottish. Her maternal grandfather was born in Canada, of Scottish, and some English, descent.
Prime Minister’s paternal grandparents were George T. Campbell and Emma. George and Emma were both born in Glasgow, Scotland.
Prime Minister Campbell’s maternal grandparents were Carlyle Edward Cook (the son of Ezra Stevens Cook and Louise Mary McCutcheon) and Elizabeth Hill Gardiner (the daughter of Jeremiah Augustus Hill Gardiner and Grace Graham). Carlyle was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, of Scottish, and some English, descent. Elizabeth was Scottish.
