Iain Duncan Smith is a British Conservative Party politician. He was the leader of the Conservative Party between 2001 and 2003.

Iain is the son of Pamela (Summers), a ballerina, and Wilfrid George Gerald “W.G.G.” Duncan Smith, a Royal Air Force flying ace of World War II. His father was born in Bangalore, India, and had Scottish and English ancestry. His mother was born in Nanjing, China, and had English, Irish, and 1/4 Japanese ancestry.

Iain’s paternal grandfather was named Wilfred Arthur Smith.

Iain’s maternal grandparents were Melton Edwin Arthur Lionel Summers (the son of William Arthur Summers and Evelyn Rosina Bond) and Catherine Cecilia Shaw (the daughter of Samuel Lewis Shaw and Ellen Oshey/O’Sea Matsumuro). William was born in North Petherton, to an English father, William Alexander Summers, and an Irish mother, Louisa Margaret Thornley. Evelyn was Irish. Samuel was born in Hamstead, England, and had English and Irish ancestry. Iain’s great-grandmother Ellen was Japanese.

Iain is descended from Adam Duncan, a Scottish admiral in the British navy.
