Fredric was the son of Cora Brown (Marcher), a schoolteacher, and John Frederick Bickel, a Presbyterian Church elder. His father had German ancestry. His mother was of English, as well as Scottish and Dutch, and remote German, Belgian (Flemish), and Norwegian, descent.
Fredric’s paternal grandparents were John Bickel (the son of Ludwig Bickel and Susanna Reigner) and Regina Vetter (the daughter of Johann Georg Vetter and Christine Catharine).
